RPM Update Summary
This is a summary of the changes for the RPM Remote Print
Manager™
5.0.70.6 version. The Elite version features are now in release, and
are
not spelled out below. Since the source code for the Elite and Select
versions track, these changes also apply to the new Elite release.
You can see the full list of changes on the RPM
Roadmap page.
Summary of changes in version 5.0.70.6:
- PDF creation issues:
- Elite only: added watermark, encryption, permissions support
- all versions: addressed page limit of 8191; memory usage
- handles plain text now; see next item
- Added auto-calculate page layout for text printing and PDF
creation; also an option on text markup transform. You will no longer get the "rf5 input is required" message when you feed a plain text file to the text print action, for instance.
- Telnet changes: added username support to GUI; added "quiet
print" timeout setting; changed the way timeouts are logged; minimized
print job naming options to those relevant to telnet
- Disk space alert:
RPM now asseses free disk space on a local drive before committing to
receive a print job. RPM also checks disk usage on archive action,
email action, and others. Supports both error and warning with
respect to handling.
- Job archive: if you had job archive set on a queue with date retention, we found cases where this just wasn't removing jobs. RPM now has a special task which looks at archived jobs fairly often, and removes the expired jobs. You can also set dates with decimal, for instance, 0.1 days would be 2.4 hours.
- Changes in HP PCL support: added HP PCL codes to PCL code
removal; found a buffer alignment problem where some long codes could
be skipped; the PCL Banner page can now be blank, or a single dot, to
facilitate pulling a separator page from another tray; PCL duplex now
works in the "text markup to PCL" transform
- Print speed
improvement for very large print jobs: RPM 5.0
had logged everything at high detail, but for very large print jobs
this significantly slows down receiving and printing. RPM now logs
internally at the level set in the GUI, which defaults to low.
- The string translator now makes regular expression support
optional. If you view an existing setup in the GUI, regular expression
support is off. For existing setups, it will be on, which preserves the
previous behavior.
- In the filter action and filter transform you can now set maximum idle time. If this is set, RPM will monitor the process, and if the total CPU time does not increase in the specified number of seconds, RPM will assume the process is hung, and terminate it. This should be a great benefit to users who use certain 3rd party products to print PDF files to a Windows printer.
- If you had "line wrap" set in the text markup transform, the text markup to PDF transform was not wrapping lines correctly. This is fixed.
- Other GUI changes:
- License status now appears in the status bar
- Queues without actions now have an empty (black and
white) printer icon
- Selecting large numbers of print jobs, then removing
them, now works correctly. You no longer get a failure
message with "[]" intermittently. The same changes were applied to
other print job operations including hold, reprint, etc.
- GUI now supports moving print jobs between queues as well
as copying. You can also change the behavior of "drag and drop" between
copy or move.
- Minor changes to support clients on Windows 2000.
- In the Queue Status panel, transforms and actions are now
flipped (transforms come first) and both are clearly marked.
- Also added a queue description.
- The print job properties dialog now supports start and end page.
- We added an error message column to the Jobs panel. If the job state is error, now you'll see why.
- In the device properties dialog, you can now reset a device in the error state.
- The Devices panel now shows maximum use and current use count. Maximum use is the most concurrent print jobs that can use this device. Current use is the number of concurrent print jobs currently using the device.
- In the text markup dialog, lines per inch and lines per
page are now mutually exclusive, as you would expect. The same applies
to characters per inch versus characters per line.
- Updated the Windows credentials dialog to show the logged
in user, and the domain or computer name depending on your local network
- The filter action now supports standard error.
- Also in the filter action, you no longer set "Run one filter". This toggle actually changed the "maximum use" setting for the command line. The Devices panel now lets you set the maximum use count for all actions that use that command line.
- Added log search to the Log panel; you can search for log
text, message code, date/time, or severity.
- Added "log purge" to the log menu, which will remove all
existing log entries. If you regularly archive your existing log
records, this could be ideal for keeping your database small.
- The list handlers are also much more efficient. You can now
scroll through a very long list of queues, or the log, with much
snappier response.
